Evergreen, Alabama, is a city in Conecuh County and serves as the county seat.
Evergreen had been attracting nearby settlers from South Carolina and Georgia since the beginning of the 1800s but was not officially founded until 1819. The town was formally founded by James Cosey and several other veterans of the Revolutionary War; however, it remained nameless until the Reverand Alexander Travis came to town and was impressed by the lush forests and foliage. Hence the name Evergreen was born, and no one has looked back since.
Evergreen is nicknamed “The Emerald City,” which is another reference to the ever-expanding beauty of its natural surroundings. In addition to its famed beauty, Evergreen has also been popularized through both Bigfoot and collard greens.
In 1973, Evergreen was labeled the “collard green capital of Alabama". To celebrate the designation, Evergreen hosts an annual Collard Green Festival. Evergreen was also awarded the title of “Bigfoot capital of Alabama” in 2017 by a local city councilman. To this day, the city of Evergreen is seeking official recognition of the title from the state of Alabama.
