Enterprise, Alabama is a city in the southeastern part of Coffee county and the southwestern part of Dale county. Originally, Enterprise was part of the Dothan-Enterprise-Ozark combined statistical area but due to its rapid growth and development, Enterprise became its own separate primary statistical area for census enumeration.
First settled in 1881, by a tradesman by the name of John Henry Carmichael, Enterprise began as a regional trading post. After the construction Alabama Midland Railway, Enterprise's population boomed to over 3,750 in 1906.
1915 is the year that changed everything for the Enterprise community. The spring of 1915 brought on an infestation of invasive boll weevils which subsequently ruined the cotton crops in Coffee county. The boll weevil infestation turned Enterprise on its head. The nearly bankrupt farmers were faced with economic ruin, forcing their hands to diversify their crops, planting peanuts and other crops in an effort to lessen the damage and recoup some of their losses. As a result, Coffee county and Enterprise became the United States leading producer of peanuts, revitalizing the local economy and saving the town from near disaster. To commemorate the trying times, the citizens of Enterprise erected a boll weevil statue in their town square. To this day it is the only statue dedicated to an insect pest in the world.
While we weren't there during the boll weevil infestation, the Gilmore family has been a solid foundation of the Enterprise community for over four decades. Our family has been providing moving services, record storage, document destruction, and more to the local families and government facilities in Enterprise. If there is anything you ever need in Enterprise of Coffee county, do not hesitate to reach out to the Gilmore family.
